His legal team asserts that he was defending his wife, but regardless of the specifics, the incident highlights that unlike many other jobs, being a CEO means the spotlight never truly turns off. 


Whether on or off the clock, a CEO’s actions can reflect back on the company they lead. DeGiorgio’s response to a personal altercation on a cruise shows the decisiveness that can be valuable in his role—quick to act in the face of a threat. However, it also highlights how swiftly things can spiral when decisions are made in the heat of the moment. In leadership, timing and control are key, and even well-intentioned reactions can have unforeseen consequences.


Similarly, O'Leary has become infamous for his outspoken, irreverent style, often using sharp language to criticize competitors or regulators. His brashness has garnered both admiration and backlash, but it’s clear that the constant pressure of leading a company in the spotlight can sometimes lead to decisions or comments that might not align with ideal executive conduct.


It’s important to recognize that CEOs are not immune to the stress, emotions, or mistakes that any of us might experience. The job comes with an immense weight—the responsibility to steer an organization through turbulent waters, deal with financial pressures, and make decisions that affect thousands of employees, shareholders, and customers. 


They, too, face moments where their patience runs thin, where they might snap or react in ways that are far from the polished professionalism we expect from top leaders. However, the key difference between a CEO and most people is that the world is watching—and judging.


In these high-pressure moments, executive presence—the ability to stay composed, confident, and authoritative—becomes more critical than ever. The ability to transform anger, frustration, or even disappointment into constructive actions, rather than explosive reactions, is what makes a legendary CEO. For instance, while O'Leary’s confrontational style may have driven Ryanair’s visibility, it has also sparked unnecessary conflict, alienating potential allies and creating negative perceptions of the company. On the other hand, DeGiorgio’s physical altercation shows how quickly things can escalate.


Yet, despite these troubling situations, it’s crucial to maintain a compassionate perspective. Mistakes happen, and even the most seasoned leaders can falter in stressful situations. The true test of leadership lies in how a CEO recovers and learns from those moments. It's about taking responsibility, demonstrating accountability, and using those challenges as stepping stones toward greater emotional resilience.


We are living in a world of instant communication and global transparency, CEOs must understand that their actions—and their reactions—are magnified. Executive presence isn’t just about being calm, collected, or strategic when things are going smoothly. It’s about showing the world that, even when faced with immense pressure or frustration, a leader can express themselves firmly, authentically, and with respect. It’s about creating an environment where mistakes can be acknowledged, but where the focus remains on solutions and the future, not the missteps of the past.


So while CEOs like DeGiorgio and O'Leary might have rockstar-ish behaving badly moments when their emotions get the better of them, the focus should be on how they use their experiences to refine their leadership. The world expects a lot from them, but they are still human, navigating an incredibly demanding role. The balance between emotional expression and executive presence is delicate, but when managed well, it can elevate a leader's credibility and the respect they garner—both inside and outside their organizations. It’s not about perfection; it’s about showing up with integrity, resilience, and a commitment to growth, which ultimately creates a lasting legacy of leadership.
