The 2025 NFL Draft was a nerve wracking experience for football fans this year. There were names I expected to hear in the first round picks that just didn’t happen, and well, there were some surprises, to say the least. As many of us followed the excitement, and action, I couldn’t help, but notice the valuable lessons we can glean from an executive recruitment perspective.
The NFL teams aren’t the only organizations navigating the very complex challenges of identifying the best talent. Companies across sectors and continents are also feeling the pressure as the cost of a bad hire can linger for years with the unsolicited help of social media. In the executive suite especially as recent data points to a sharp uptick in resignations this past year.
In such an interesting time that we are experiencing sharpening your focus to uncover the best leadership for the company is a must. We’re not saying to throw out the recruitment staples like reviewing CVs, bulleted qualifications, and accredited academic degrees. What we are saying is that a performance based approach inspired by the NFL Draftcan be a positive addition to your headhunting strategy.
TheNFL Draft ProcessThe NFL Draft only “technically” starts in early spring. NFL hopefuls are auditioning throughout the season. Scouts and coaches apply a laser-like scrutiny to game film, stats, and combine results. Intangibles: like how a player handles adversity, how they improve over time, and how they contribute to team culture are also considered.
All the ingredients mentioned build leaders. Make no mistake, when someone is chosen to play in the NFL it is with the assumption that the athlete has strong leadership potential and will sufficiently support, and add value to the team. In the same regard, agile companies look beyond titles and credentials.
They’re analyzing measurable impact in high-pressure situations. They’re assessing how candidates adapt, communicate, and drive results across functions and teams. Like top-tier coaches, smart hiring managers know that potential isn’t always obvious on paper.
Tom Brady, Brock Purdy and Jason Kelce come to mind. All were late picks, and have reached legendary status. These footnotes in sports history remind us that talent identification isn’t just about finding the loudest voice in the room or the most polished pedigree. It’s about looking deeper—at character, consistency, and coachability. Great leaders often rise not because they were the obvious choice, but because someone took the time to see their potential and develop it.
Here are a couple of actionable ways you can apply the NFL Draft mindset to your executive recruitment strategy:
1. History Over Hype – Focus on what a candidate has done, not just where they’ve worked. Use behavioral interviewing to get at real-world sense of impact and results.
2. Growth Over Time – Look for signs of learning agility, adaptability, and continuous improvement. Just like in the NFL, potential can outpace polish in the long run.
3. Corporate Culture Misfit?– Leaders can disrupt the status quo by implementing necessary changes to elevate your brand. There’s a way to make changes less tumultuous by incorporating the voices of the impacted and showing empathy. However, please keep in mind that a solid corporate culture fit might not bring innovation and will probably fall into the poor habits of your current leadership. Evaluate how someone will contribute to the culture, not just fit into it.
4. Data Over Gut? – Numbers matter, but so do instincts. The best hiring decisions come from a mix of analytical rigor and human insight—just like in sports scouting. Andy Reid, Tony Dungy and Mike Zimmer are solid examples of this strategy.
If only we had highlight reels to review the process, strategy and execution of leaders we are evaluating for top tier roles like they do in the NFL. What we do have are track records, references, and the ability to ask deeper questions.
As the deep wave of leadership resignations continue to climb taking a page or two from the NFL Draft book seems apropos.
Look at a candidate’s history
Look for progress
Don’t underestimate someone with heart.
